A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

National Judicial College

For more than 47 years The National Judicial College has been meeting the ever-changing challenges of educating the nation’s judiciary. The years ahead will continue to demand new ways of thinking and delivery of innovative judicial education for our nation’s judges and court personnel. The NJC and its dedicated staff, faculty, trustees and board of visitors stand ready to meet those challenges with a steadfast commitment to providing education and innovation toward advancing justice. We do so with a commitment to inclusiveness and diversity, a recognition of the demands society places on the judiciary, and an embrace of the belief that widespread access to new ideas and inspired judicial education opportunities are key to a judiciary being prepared to fulfill it’s role in a democratic society.

The changing landscape of justice in our nation has provided the NJC with an opportunity to partner and collaborate with other justice-related organizations. As judicial education budgets decline, resulting in the reduction of training programs, it is imperative that all local and national institutions adjust how they deliver education. In the coming years, court improvement initiatives will continue to address the myriad of critical challenges facing our nation’s judiciary – well beyond 2010. With this in mind, the NJC is joining with others to address the interrelated challenges of judicial recruitment, competency, retention and leadership. Each judge is in his or her own right – a manager/leader. The future of justice requires that the courts provide the training needed for each judge to hone their skills and abilities. These skills enable judges to not only effectively preside in court, but also assume responsibility for achieving needed change in the administration of justice.

It is unclear how long our current economic conditions will last, or how these conditions will negatively impact judicial education budgets in the future. We must, however, look at this crisis as an opportunity, one that encourages us to refresh our thinking, eliminate outdated or ineffective learning methods, and commit ourselves to prepare the 21st century jurist to meet the challenges of today and the future. As a provider of local, national and international judicial education, we are committed to education – innovation – advancing justice and we appreciate your ongoing support and engagement with The National Judicial College.
