Many criminal cases involve alcohol and other drug addictions. Some persons
with alcohol and other drug addictions also suffer from major mental health
disorders. Judges who handle such cases should have a thorough understanding
of substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring disorders issues as
they affect the justice system. After taking this course, participants
will be able to describe the physiological and pharmacological aspects
of substance abuse; identify and assess individuals with major mental
disorders; select appropriate judicial strategies and tools for treatment
and monitoring; and design a plan for the implementation of systems or
ideas to address co-occurring disorders issues. Online materials will
be available for judges to complete approximately six weeks prior to the
course start date. At that time, participants will receive an email with
the website location and their login information. Participants should
plan to set aside approximately two to four hours of time to review and
complete the materials prior to the course.
Qualifies as an elective in the Certificate in Judicial Development,
General Jurisdiction Trial Skills, Special Court Trial Skills and Tribal
Judicial Skills programs.
