Ethics, Bias and Judging: Reaching Higher Ground: A Web-Based Course

Using hypothetical scenarios, online discussions and interaction with
faculty members, participants will explore a variety of ethical issues
facing the judiciary. After this online course, participants will be able
to distinguish between proper and improper personal conduct in courtroom
and community activities as well as proper and improper communication
between litigants, lawyers, judges and others; rule with confidence, knowing
their decisions are ethically appropriate; recognize and discuss the importance
of learning about different cultures and their impact on courtrooms; describe
the impact of bias and stereotyping on court proceedings; and reduce bias
and prejudice to maintain the integrity of the court process. Participants
will have weekly assignments, online group discussions and six live Web
conferences with the faculty. It is anticipated that judges will spend
between three and four hours on lessons per week.
Qualifies as an elective in the Certificate in Judicial Development,
Administrative Law Adjudication Skills, Dispute Resolution Skills, General
Jurisdiction Trial Skills, Special Court Trial Skills and Tribal Judicial
Skills programs.

NJC Web Courses
The NJC’s Web-based
courses allow participants to study at any time and interact with
many judges from around the country in a collegial online atmosphere.
Expert faculty members challenge participants with self-tests, assignments,
and reading materials that can be completed anywhere a judge has Internet
access. Each course will meet for at least two prescheduled Web conferences
hosted by the faculty.
