Selected Criminal Evidence Issues: A Web-Based Course*

Judges participating in this Web-based course will focus on selected significant criminal evidence issues and explore ways to make evidentiary rulings quickly and confidently in criminal cases. After this course, participants will be able to identify the rules of inclusion and exclusion; make proper determinations on foundations for the admissibility of criminal evidence; identify the rules for impeachment, cross-examination, confessions and admissions; and rule effectively on hearsay exclusions and exceptions. Using the Federal Rules of Evidence as a guide, this course will incorporate common law rules when applicable. Participants will have weekly assignments, online group discussions and four live Web conferences with the faculty. It is anticipated that judges will spend between four and five hours on lessons per week.

*Prerequisite: Law degree or completion of Fundamentals of Evidence (formerly Basic Evidence) or an equivalent or the two-week Special Court Jurisdiction course.

Qualifies as an elective in the Certificate in Judicial Development, General Jurisdiction Trial Skills, Special Court Trial Skills and Tribal Judicial Skills programs.
