A Web-Based Course

Many individuals form their perceptions of the justice system through interactions with courts that handle issues such as those found in small claims cases. After this online course, judges will be able to positively impact the public’s view of court processes. Specifically, the participants will be able to construct effective opening instructions, utilize alternate dispute resolution programs, handle difficult litigants and manage trials to obtain the information required for a sound decision. Judges will also be able to formulate the court’s role in the collection of judgments. At times, the substantive issues in small claims cases can be complex. This course will enable judges to handle those cases more proficiently. Finally, participants will be able to provide answers to common ethical dilemmas. Participants will have weekly assignments, online group discussions and six live Web conferences with the faculty. It is anticipated that judges will spend between three and four hours on lessons per week. On Thursday of each week of the course, the faculty will deliver a live hour-long Web conference.

Qualifies as an elective in the Certificate in Judicial Development, Dispute Resolution Skills, General Jurisdiction Trial Skills, Special Court Trial Skills and Tribal Judicial Skills programs.
