Unfortunately, persons with mental disabilities are too often caught in a revolving door – coming into contact again and again with the justice system. Such contact may be through the criminal docket for issues such as substance abuse or minor public infractions; through the probate docket when a family member must step in to assist; or, through the family law docket when problems, usually related to the disability, arise. This course provides judges with an understanding of mental health issues that affect and are affected by the justice system. After attending this course, participants will be able to identify and assess individuals with mental health disorders and employ judicial strategies to address them effectively. Online materials will be available for judges to complete approximately six weeks prior to the course start date. At that time, participants will receive an email with the website location and their login information. Participants should plan to set aside approximately two to four hours of time to review and complete the materials prior to
the course.
Qualifies as an elective for the Certificate in Judicial Development, General Jurisdiction Trial Skills, Special Court Trial Skills, and Tribal Judicial Skills programs.
