Sentencing Motor Vehicle Law Offenders

The rate of recidivism in motor vehicle offenses is high and judges need
the most up-to-date information to assist them in reducing recidivism
rates among these potentially dangerous offenders. This course is designed
to provide judges with an overview of sentencing practices and evidence-based
options for traffic offenses. After this course, participants will be
able to develop plans for sentencing various motor vehicle law offenders,
including younger drivers, older drivers, repeat offenders, status offenses,
substances abusers, and illegal immigrants without valid licenses; adopt
valid conditions of probation and/or sentencing alternatives; recognize
appointment of counsel issues at critical stages; identify and utilize
assessment, treatment, and counseling resources to assist with imposing
appropriate sentences; identify new technology and practices used in sentencing;
and creatively use judicial discretion to fashion and implement effective
sentences.
Qualifies as a requirement in the Certificate in Judicial Development,
Special Court Trial Skills program and as an elective in the Administrative
Law Adjudication Skills, General Jurisdiction Trial Skills and the Tribal
Judicial Skills programs.
