Basic Legal Affairs Reporting for Journalists
July 28-29, 2008 / Reno, NV

Presented in collaboration with the Conference
of Court Public Information Officers and the Reynolds
School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno.
With a strong media focus on legal news stories, why are news reports
often criticized as inaccurate? Legal reporting is a specialty too often
tackled by the general assignment reporter. Accurately covering the courts
requires knowledge of court procedures and legal terminology. This course
for journalists provides the basics needed to cover the courts effectively.
Topics covered include an overview of the First and Sixth Amendments,
the court structure, the court process, court rules, judicial and journalist
obligations, the gag order, the court record, the high-profile trial,
and expanding the news source potential.
