Specifically designed for judges without formal law school training, this course will enable participants to handle small claims, traffic court and misdemeanor cases more proficiently. It will also provide them with the skills to conduct criminal hearings and trials in compliance with constitutional and statutory standards; make appropriate evidentiary rulings; communicate effectively in court and with the media; recognize the psychological profiles of offenders in court; manage self-represented litigants in criminal and civil cases; appropriately sanction direct and indirect contempt; control potential courtroom disruptions; make appropriate decisions in small claims cases; analyze the principles of damages and restitution in civil cases; and apply legal reasoning to analyze the facts of a case.

Qualifies as a requirement for the Certificate in Judicial Development, Dispute Resolution Skills, Special Court Trial Skills and Tribal Judicial Skills programs.
