Evidence in a Courtroom Setting

This course is designed for all levels of trial court judges. Participants
will review the Federal Rules of Evidence and compare them with
the rules of evidence in their states. After this course, participants
will recognize the importance of making a trial record and will be able
to do so efficiently; differentiate between impeachment evidence and substantive
evidence; explain the balancing analysis for admission of relevant evidence;
discuss constitutional limitations on the admissibility of evidence; identify
the foundational requirements for opinion testimony as a lay witness;
describe the various methods by which a witness may be qualified to testify
as an expert; and define hearsay and apply that definition to identify
hearsay evidence. Participants will have the opportunity to apply their
enhanced and acquired knowledge on the last day of the course in an evidence
workshop.
*This course has been submitted for inclusion in the Judicial Studies
degree program.
Qualifies as an elective in the Certificate in Judicial Development,
Dispute Resolution Skills, General Jurisdiction Trial Skills, Special
Court Trial Skills and Tribal Judicial Skills programs.
