Faculty member Andre Davis wins ABA’s Marshall Award; late board chair Bill Robinson honored

Two of the College’s own were honored last Friday at the American Bar Association’s Annual Meeting in New York City.

Judge Andre M. Davis of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit received the 2017 John Marshall Award for improvement of the administration of justice. The NJC’s late board chair, Wm. T. (Bill) Robinson III, was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Marshall Award has been presented annually by the ABA Judicial Division and the Standing Committee on the American Judicial System since 2001.

Davis has served on the NJC faculty since 1994. He has also served on the Faculty Council. The Baltimore native has been a judge for more than 30 years. He was appointed to the U.S. District Court by President Bill Clinton in 1995 and to the Court of Appeals by President Barack Obama in 2009. He took senior status in 2014 but maintains an active caseload. Davis plans to retire at the end of the month to become Baltimore’s city solicitor.

Joan Robinson accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of her late husband. A former president of the ABA, Mr. Robinson was a tireless advocate for the rule of law and the judiciary. He joined the NJC’s Board of Trustees in 2013 and served as chair from June 2016 until his passing, May 9, 2017.
