Richard Bryan, former U.S. Senator and Nevada Governor, will serve a three-year term on The National Judicial College’s (NJC) Board of Trustees.
Former U.S. Senator Bryan has been a long-time supporter of The National Judicial College.
“He supported and encouraged us as Governor and as an United States Senator,” said Matt Sweeney, Chairman of the NJC Board of Trustees. “Twice he presented our Jackson Lecture to the graduates of the college’s general jurisdiction course. We are very pleased that he has found a new way to serve the NJC, accepting our invitation to join the Board of Trustees.”
Currently Senator Bryan is a director at Fennemore Craig, a business law firm in Las Vegas where he practices in the area of government relations at the federal, state and local levels, particularly in the area of public land use issues. He earned his LL.B. from the University of California Hastings College of Law and his B.A. from the University of Nevada, Reno.
The NJC Board of Trustees fosters a climate of excellence, promotes the development of innovative education programs and provides leadership in achieving the NJC’s mission. Trustees are a diverse and dedicated group of judges and lawyers from across the country.
“Recognizing the importance of having The National Judicial College on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno when I was Governor, I teamed up with the late Bill Raggio to provide funding in my budget for the NJC,” said Senator Richard Bryan. “I am delighted to serve as a trustee for this important judicial educational program.”
Senator Bryan began his legal career in 1964 as a Deputy District Attorney in Clark County, Nevada. Two years later, he was named Clark County’s first Public Defender. In 1968, he was elected to the Nevada State Assembly and re-elected in 1970.
He was elected to the State Senate in 1972 and re-elected in 1976. The former prosecutor won his first statewide election as Nevada’s Attorney General where he played a major role in successfully defending Nevada’s gaming regulatory structure in Federal Courts.
In 1982, he was elected to his first of two terms as Governor of Nevada. Under his leadership as Governor, economic diversification and the attraction of new businesses to Nevada became a priority. In 1988, he was elected to the first of two terms in the U.S. Senate.
