Focusing on the Classroom, Courtroom and Community in 2009

2/12/2009

General Jurisdiction Class

The National Judicial College extends its most heartfelt appreciation to all of our supporters who helped us in our fundraising efforts in 2008. The funds raised allow the NJC to enhance our curriculum and develop new courses and programs, as well as provide much-needed scholarship assistance to our nation’s judges who are experiencing record shortfalls in their state budgets. Fundraising will be a critical focus this year as we strive to continue to provide our outstanding programs and services to our nation’s judiciary.

Education provided by the NJC is more important than ever as our nation’s courts and judges are faced with budget cuts and overwhelming case loads. In addition to our existing courses, the College is creating programs to provide education in a cost effective manner in Reno, regionally, locally in-state and on the web. One approach is new Webcasts where judges can learn about pertinent topics using webcast computer technology. The first Webcast debuted last October and was entitled, "From the Second Amendment to the Death Penalty: Notable Decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court, 2007-2008 Term.” The next webcast will be The Fourth Amendment and Digital Evidence on February 19. More information may be obtained here.

In addition to our educational offerings, this year we plan to celebrate The National Judicial College’s alumni and supporters who have made an impact in the Classroom, Courtroom, Chambers and their Community. These include individuals who have seen a direct benefit from their time at the NJC or have witnessed first-hand how the NJC has made a positive difference in their career and in their own communities.

Individuals such as the NJC’s 2009 Faculty Council chair and faculty member, Judge Dan Ryan of Michigan. Judge Ryan began taking courses at the College in 1995 and has received his master’s degree and will soon receive a Ph.D. in judicial studies. He believes in the value of the NJC, not only because of the excellent education the organization provides but also because of the extraordinary commitment to our nation’s judiciary from private donors, the NJC’s Board of Trustees, Board of Visitors, faculty and staff.

Your support of The National Judicial College is more important than ever. We invite you to follow us this year as we focus on the positive and streamline our efforts to weather the recession.
