The National Judicial College Awarded Grant from Humanity United

6/10/10

Liberian Judges

Liberian Judges and William Brunson

The latest grant from Humanity United funds the presentation of two faculty development workshops for the James A.A. Pierre Judicial Institute in Liberia by NJC staff members William Brunson, Esq. and Joseph Sawyer. These photos were taken at the previous workshop in 2009.

The National Judicial College is pleased to announce that it recently received a third grant from Humanity United, an independent grant-making organization committed to building a world where modern day slavery and mass atrocities are no longer possible. The latest grant from Humanity United will fund the presentation of two faculty development workshops to be presented by NJC staff members William Brunson, Esq. and Joseph Sawyer for the James A.A. Pierre Judicial Institute in Liberia. The upcoming workshops will build on previous faculty development workshops for the Institute (also funded by Humanity United) conducted by the NJC in 2009.

The American Bar Association’s Rule of Law Initiative will also provide logistical support and sponsor the faculty members’ travel expenses.

Based on the information presented during last year’s workshops, many Institute faculty members have written new course curricula, while others have already presented judicial education seminars at the Institute. The purpose of the Humanity United funded workshops is to develop internal judicial education teaching talent within the Liberian judiciary, with the long-term goal of building a fair and trusted system of justice in Liberia. Mr. Brunson found his previous experience in educating the Liberian judiciary quite compelling. “The judges, who have endured more than 13 years of civil war, were extremely gracious and very motivated students. Despite the challenging environment which is in disarray after so much conflict, they were joyful.”

Humanity United invests in the power of ideas and individuals, bringing together the best in research, policy, and advocacy to activate local and global solutions to alleviate human suffering on a broad scale. The organization supports efforts that empower affected communities and address the root causes of conflict and modern-day slavery to build lasting peace. For more information on Humanity United, please visit their website at www.humanityunited.org.

The National Judicial College would like to extend its gratitude to Humanity United for this latest grant and for their commitment to advancing the cause of justice in Liberia.
