The NJC Celebrates 2008 Donor Contributions

Board of Visitors

Humanity United is one of the NJC's recent donors, with donations totaling nearly $25,000.

The NJC is a leader in providing judicial education across the country and around the world. That reputation cannot be earned, and maintained, without the support of our donors.  We are proud to reflect on just a few examples of how donor support is helping us to provide a brighter future for our nation’s judiciary.

The NJC was recently awarded two grants from Humanity United totaling nearly $25,000 in support of the country of Liberia's effort to establish a Judicial Institute. Members from the Liberian Steering Committee visited the NJC in March to explore components of an institute that will serve their country's citizens. “Institutional training is an indispensable element for promoting rule of law, especially in post conflict situations," explained Justice Kabineh M. Ja’neh, associate justice, Supreme Court of Liberia, and chair of the Judicial Training Institute Steering Committee. “The NJC has a beautiful system. The various administrative mechanisms in place, such as the program attorney, make the training much more effective.” Justice Ja'neh visited the NJC again in July to attendthe Judicial Writing course. The NJC is moving forward with the next steps needed to fulfill the goal of establishing a Judicial Training Institute in Liberia.

The benefits of technology upgrades at the College will be seen for years to come:
The classroom renovations so generously funded with grants in 2007 from the E.L. Cord Foundation and the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation are complete.  Those who come to the NJC for education and professional development now have the benefit of learning in state-of-the-art, technologically enhanced classrooms. This year, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the E.L. Cord Foundation, the NJC will renovate its multimedia room to serve a wider variety of needs for meeting and classroom venues.

Scholarships allow us to reach further than we thought possible:
The NJC is able to offer scholarships because of the generosity of many funders. For example, this year, to help fulfill the educational needs of the judges of their respective states, the North Carolina Bar Plan for IOLTA awarded a grant of $8,820 and the South Carolina Bar Foundation awarded $20,560. The Rhode Island Foundation has also provided $12,200 for the education of its state’s judges in 2008.

Support for The Pillars of Justice Fund – making an impact at the College today: Thanks to the dedication of the NJC’s Board of Visitors and Board of Trustees, the Pillars of Justice Fund is a great success.  Many of our Visitors and Trustees have reached out to contacts and their own companies and firms for support of the Fund. In a short time, the Pillars of Justice Fund has provided support for the creation of new projects, including a six-hour online curriculum for new judges who have been appointed or elected and not yet assured their judgeship. The online program features reading assignments, quizzes and curricula that will assist them in their new position. In addition, support is providing for the production of a Trial Judges’ Resource Guide on Complex Litigation based on the Federal Judicial Center’s Manual for Complex Litigation Fourth edition. This guide will be invaluable as a useable tool to assist state judges in managing complex cases.

Board of Trustees – Direction, Guidance and Resources:
As a member of our Board of Trustees, Marybel Batjer, of Harrah’s Entertainment understands the importance of how her contributions make a direct impact. Not only has Ms. Batjer made a generous personal donation this year, she has also secured several major gifts for the Pillars of Justice Fund. Her counsel to the NJC has also been instrumental on many fundraising initiatives, including exploring an endowment campaign for the College’s National Tribal Judicial Center

The great work the NJC does to provide a brighter future for justice is made possible because of the commitment and dedication of our Board of Visitors and Board of Trustee members and generous contributions from our donors.
