NJC
Holds Reception in Los Angeles Hosted by Trustee Thomas V. Girardi, Esq.
11/1/2007
The National Judicial College's Board of Trustees held their October meeting in Southern California and participated in a panel presentation entitled, “By the Time the Case Starts, Are All Opinions Made? The Press and the Law.” Trustees along with guests from Los Angeles law firms, judges and other invited guests attended the panel presentation at Arnie Morton's in downtown Los Angeles. Panelists addressed questions such as: Are there ethical implications in attempting to use the media to influence either the settlement or outcome of a trial? Who is responsible for focusing media and public attention on a particular case? Does intensive press coverage of controversial cases contaminate the jury pool or influence jurists? What are the pros and cons of cameras in the courtroom? The panel was moderated
by Hon. William F. Dressel, NJC president, and included Linda C. Deutsch,
legal affairs reporter for the Associated Press, John T. Nockleby, professor
of law and director of the Civil Justice Program at Loyola Law School,
and Robert Shapiro, Esq., of Christensen, Glaser, Fink, Jacobs, Weil &
Shapiro, LLP. The insightful presentation highlighted the similarities
and differences that the media, judiciary and legal profession face in
high-profile cases. The presentation
and reception provided an opportunity for The National Judicial College
to welcome existing and new supporters of the NJC’s Pillars of Justice
Fund, a fund to provide our nation’s judiciary with innovative,
results-oriented programs and professional development. For more information about the Pillars of Justice Fund, click here.
