NJC's Board of Visitors Meet in Reno
7/7/2007

The National Judicial College’s Board of Visitors met in Reno June 14 and 15 at the NJC. The first evening, members attended a dinner and participated in a discussion on the Vanishing Jury Trial. Hon. William F. Dressel, president of the NJC, moderated the discussion, which was led by Board of Visitors members Robert Parks, of Florida, and Judge Kevin Burke, of Minnesota. A lively discussion ensued and the consensus was that jury and court trials have decreased significantly, resulting in serious consequences for bench, bar and America’s citizens and business community.

The following day, Judge Burke kicked off a session on the Rising Cost of Litigation. He engaged participants in an interactive conversation identifying “local court/legal culture” as having the biggest impact and electronic discovery as a current area to be addressed. During lunch, members heard from Civil Mediation faculty members, John Paul Jones and Nancy Yeend, on the impact of mediation on litigation and its role in case management.

Board of Visitors members also participated in a discussion about the Pillars of Justice Fund – A Fund for the Future of Justice. Members are helping out with this campaign to reach out to law firms and corporations for support of a Research, Education and Services Fund to build unrestricted funding for the operations of the College and NJC’s endowment.

Board of Visitors members are vital to the NJC in providing leadership, encouragement and support to the overall resource development program. Members of the Board of Visitors work with the NJC administration and the Board of Trustees in furthering the College's fundraising activities on a national level.
