The National
Judicial College is a driving force in the quest for fair and impartial
justice. Academic achievements and donor contributions go hand-in-hand
in strengthening the NJC’s contribution to a well-trained judiciary.
We are proud to reflect on just a few examples of the many accomplishments
at the NJC this past year.
Academic
News
• In
locations across the country, our Seminar Series covers a diverse array
of topics. Over 300 judges will attend courses in 2007, such as Advanced
Evidence in Philadelphia, that included a reception in Constitution Hall.
Or, Today’s Justice, in Washington, D.C., where attendees heard
oral arguments during a special visit to the U.S. Supreme Court.
• In
2007, the NJC has offered special programs to visitors from Germany, Venezuela,
China, Africa, the Republic of Georgia, Turkey, Indonesia, Turkmenistan,
Serbia, Guinea, and Vietnam, as well as groups from The Near East and
South America on the intricacies of the rule of law and providing equal/timely
justice. Also, this past May, a group of Nigerian magistrates attended
Handling the Criminal Case course as well as enrolled in a variety of
NJC courses.
Donor News
• The NJC received a generous $225,000 bequest from an anonymous
couple. Their gift has been added to the NJC endowment, which will provide
support for the mission of the NJC in perpetuity.
• A generous grant of $100,000 from the E.L. Cord Foundation is
contributing to a major technology upgrade of the NJC’s classrooms.
The Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation provided an additional grant of $25,000
toward the project. These "smart classrooms" will allow us to
be technologically ahead of current trends and provide participants with
a state-of-the-art learning experience.
• The William Randolph Hearst Foundation provided $75,000 for scholarships
for judges to attend NJC courses and $25,000 in matching funds for regional
bench/bar/media workshops through the Reynolds National Center for Courts
and Media (RNCCM). The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and the McCormick
Tribune Foundation also awarded $40,000 each as a match to the State Justice
Institute grant for these workshops.
• Recently, the NJC created the Pillars of Justice Fund –
A Fund for the Future of Justice for corporations and law firms to enhance
their giving to the NJC. Support will go toward a Research, Education
and Services Fund for the development of new courses, enhance existing
curricula, increase the NJC’s endowment, or provide much-needed
scholarships for participants. For more information, please visit our
Pillars of Justice pages here.
The great work the NJC does to advance justice is made possible because
of generous contributions from our donors. If you'd like to know more
about how your support can make a difference at The National Judicial
College, please visit our Support NJC pages
