- This historic courthouse, named for its county, was built in 1891 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
- The women of this county formed the only female cavalry company on either side in the Civil War.
- The famous Scopes Monkey Trial took place here in 1925. The bottom floor is now a museum dedicated to the trial, but the upstairs is still a functioning courthouse.
- Legend has it that a judge heard his own case in this courthouse in the 1950s. He found himself not guilty of a misdemeanor.
