Managing the Capital Case in California By Daphne A. Burns, Program Attorney, The National Judicial College 2/10/2009
The National Judicial College is pleased to collaborate with the California Administrative Office of the Courts, Center for Judicial Education and Research, on a capital cases course for California judges. The course, which will be held in San Francisco on March 16-19, 2009, is funded by a grant from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. NJC's faculty will teach subjects such as a U.S. Supreme Court overview of capital cases; psychiatry and the law in capital cases; media issues; and hot topics in capital cases. The Honorable Ronald S. Coen and the Honorable Michael D. Wellington will teach the sessions on California law in capital cases. Judges Coen and Wellington have co-taught the California Death Penalty Trials course for a decade. The NJC is also pleased to return to the state of Louisiana to collaborate on a capital cases course with the Louisiana Judicial College. The course will take place in Lafayette on March 25-27, 2009. NJC's faculty will teach nuts-and-bolts sessions on pretrial issues, penalty phase, and post-conviction relief as well as a U.S. Supreme Court overview.
