Fe: Where the Trails Meet NAHO 2007 Annual
Professional Development Conference 8/1/2007 The National
Association of Hearing Officials return to Santa Fe November 4-7 for the
annual professional development conference. Topics this year include foundation courses in administrative adjudication including conduct and control of hearings, evidence, judicial review, ruling on objections, decision writing and the history and evolution of administrative law. Reflecting NAHO’s diverse membership, topics will also include Human Rights Hearings – Focus on Fairness, with Francie Cordova, Director of the New Mexico Human Rights Commission; Social Security Hearings with Retired ALJ, Peter Hemenway, of the California Department of Social Services; Special Education Due Process Hearings, with Attorney Jim Gerl of Lewisburg, W.V.; The Care and Feeding of Workers’ Compensation Litigants: Working With Pro Se Claimants, with Gregory D. Griego, New Mexico Workers’ Compensation Judge; and Administrative Driver’s License Revocation Hearings with Al Lama, New Mexico Deputy Attorney General. The curriculum includes four members of the New Mexico judiciary. Justice Patricio M. Serna of the New Mexico Supreme Court will speak on New Mexico Territorial Justice: 1846-1912 in Tuesday’s general session, Judge Lynn Pickard of the New Mexico Court of Appeals will present a seminar on Decision Writing. Paul Biderman of the University of New Mexico School of Law and Judge James J. Wechsler of the New Mexico Court of Appeals will present Ensuring Unbiased Administrative Hearings: Projecting an Appropriate Demeanor. New Mexico Court of Appeals Judge Michael D. Bustamante will speak on Judicial Review of Administrative Agency Decisions. The conference will be held at the LaFonda on the Plaza with its vintage character and colorful charm in the heart of Santa Fe’s historic center. Walk out the hotel’s front to find great restaurants, boutiques and art galleries. Within two blocks are the Palace of the Governors, St. Francis Cathedral, Loretto Chapel, the Museum of Fine Arts and the O’Keefe Museum. Conference
fees this year are $420 and NAHO members attend for $360. Rooms at the
LaFonda on the Plaza are contracted at the federal per diem rate, currently
$83 per night. The new federal per diem rate will be available in early
September. A limited number of rooms are guaranteed at the conference
rate until October 3.
