NJC Paving the Way to Safer Roads Call (800) 25-JUDGE to Sign Up Today for October Course! 8/3/2007 There is still room for judges, magistrates and hearing officers to sign up for the four-day faculty development course, offered by The National Judicial College (NJC) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The Commercial Drivers' Licensing Laws: A Faculty Development Workshop will be held Oct. 8-11, 2007, at the NJC in Reno, Nev. Participants will receive basic training in the area of commercial motor vehicle standards and education on adult learning theory. Topics covered include the importance of judicial involvement in enforcing the commercial motor vehicle standards; the difference between judicial commercial drivers’ license decisions and administrative proceedings; and the importance of judicial outreach and the canons of ethics applicable to judicial outreach efforts. “With more large commercial trucks on the roadways and more cars, the potential for tragedy increases,” said NJC Program Attorney Melody Luetkehans, who coordinates the NJC’s traffic courses. “Judicial decisions on the bench as well as judicial outreach can help ensure that commercial vehicle drivers are of aware of and obey safety rules.” The National Judicial College, in cooperation with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, has created a comprehensive website for judges and traffic court personnel that adjudicate commercial motor vehicle cases. Visit the website at www.cdlresources.org. Participants who are selected to attend this fully-funded course (tuition, course materials, roundtrip transportation, lodging and meals are paid for) agree to make at least one presentation to other judges in their home communities, relating to FMCSA regulations after attending the NJC course. They will also submit follow-up information regarding their presentations within one year. Call (800) 25-JUDGE to sign up today.
