Tribal Father and Son

The gathering is for tribal, federal, and state court judges; court commissioners; court administrators; peacemakers; mediators; traditional forum practitioners; pretrial services; attorneys; lay advocates; and guardians ad litem.

The NTJC has been charged with hosting the 2008 Walking on Common Ground II Gathering which will bring tribal, state and federal justice system officials together to promote the common goals of collaboration, communication and cooperation.

The Walking on Common Ground II Gathering will be held on December 9-10, 2008 in Palm Springs, California. Beginning in the late 1980’s, tribal, state and federal judiciaries began to recognize the need to reach consensus to solve issues that were affecting the members of all communities. State forums offered educational opportunities to address jurisdictional problems that led to national forums where the issues were emphasized and the serious work to promote collaborative projects and to realize appropriate solutions began.

April, May and July 2005 saw a series of three Gatherings that brought together individuals from courts, law enforcement and service agencies to talk about their experiences and to promote respect among the three justice entities. The 2008 Gathering will highlight the successful collaborations that have evolved and continue the dialogue on further collaboration, enhanced communication and increased communication among the three justice systems for the benefit of all people of this Nation.
