In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on June 3rd, Donald Trump claimed that U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel should have recused himself from ruling on a case involving Trump University documents because of comments Mr. Trump made against Mexican-Americans.
“When the judge ruled that the documents should be made public this week, Trump said in more ways than one that the judge, a Mexican-American and natural born U.S. citizen, could not possibly have ruled on the matter without bringing personal bias to the case.” Mr. Trump stated that Judge Curiel, had an interest in derailing his presidential campaign because of comments made against Mexican Nationals and perhaps thought that the documents regarding Trump University might accomplish that.
The Washington Post asked several experts on judicial law and ethics to comment on the ruling and statements made by Mr. Trump. President Chad Schmucker offers some consideration for laws governing judges and some ethical “grey areas”.
