Animal Cruelty:  A continuation of the January 8, 2020 webcast – this webinar will summarize the issues that arise in the prosecution of animal cruelty cases under state penal codes.  (While cruelty to animals may arise in the civil context, this webinar will be restricted to the criminal law.)  These are probably the most numerous cases for state court judges who deal with criminal cases.  Anti-cruelty laws vary from state to state, but similar issues arise in many cases.  The focus will be on issues that are treated differently in animal cruelty cases than in other criminal cases and will include: an overview of common provisions in state codes; search and seizure and warrants; evidence collection, preservation, evaluation; reviewing veterinary forensic testimony; psychological analysis of offenders; and use of animal behavior experts.

After this session, you will be able to:

  • Summarize the issues that arise in animal cruelty cases;
  • Explain similarity of anti-cruelty laws between the various states; and,
  • Discuss the evidentiary issues that arise in animal cruelty cases.
