This fast-paced and interactive 90-minute program will introduce participants to the challenges facing judges in Indian Country in impaired driving cases. Some of the jurisdictional barriers facing tribal judges will be addressed. The panel will also elaborate as to how reporting and data collection can benefit both tribal sovereignty as well as neighboring states by making roads safer. Participants will learn to appraise tribal codes for authority and limits. Panelists will identify available resources in individual tribal communities to establish the integral customs and traditions available for sentencing/dispositions/orders so that native defendants can participate in meaningful community building.
