When hearing traffic cases, judges are often tasked with sentencing many DUI defendants for the second or third time. To curb the incidence of multiple offenders, judges need to have alternative sentences that are more effective than the standard sentencing guidelines. Based on current research studies, and existing programs that have proven effective, this webcast will provide the trial judge with practical and effective sentencing alternative for the repeat DUI offender. The faculty will provide alternative sentences for both the metropolitan court, as well as the rural court.
After this webcast, participants will be able to:
- Discuss special defendant issues that occur with the repeat DUI offender;
- Create effective sentences that address this dangerous ongoing behavior; and
- Identify technology, such as various interlock devices, that the judge may require the defendant to use.
This webcast is brought to you through generous funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
