Prominent Federal Judge to Speak at the NJC

RENO, Nev. – Hon. Reggie B. Walton, who has presided over numerous prominent cases in his career, will speak at The National Judicial College on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The United States District Court Judge for the District of Columbia will address “Handling High-Profile Casesâ€.

A reception will be held in the NJC lobby at 5 p.m. PST, while the speech will begin at 6 p.m. Judge Walton’s speech will last 45 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A with the audience, which will include Boyd School of Law alumni, members of the local courts, and faculty and students of the NJC.

Judge Walton’s successful judicial career has been highlighted by presiding over several high-profile federal cases. Judge Walton presided over the 2007 trial of I. Lewis “Scooter†Libby, who was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice while serving as Vice President Dick Cheney’s Chief of Staff and National Security Advisor. He also presided over the trial of former Major League Baseball player Roger Clemens, who was charged with perjury and obstruction of Congress.

An alumnus of the NJC, Judge Walton will be in Reno as faculty for the College’s Conducting the Trial course, Sept. 26-29.

Judge Walton assumed his position as a United States District Judge for the District of Columbia in 2001 after being nominated to the position by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the United States Senate. He previously served as an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia from 1981 to 1989 and 1991 to 2001, having been appointed by Presidents Ronald Reagan in 1981 and George H.W. Bush in 1991.

About Rollan Melton

The late Rollan Melton was a noted journalist in Reno, Nevada, who was keenly interested in the relationship between the courts and the media. He held prominent leadership positions with Gannett including: 1) senior vice president in the Newspaper Division, 2) heading the Gannett West group 3) member of the Gannett Board of Directors and 4) a leading force for the creation of USA Today. He served multiple times on the Board of Trustees of The National Judicial College and was the Board’s secretary. Rollan understood the importance of fair and impartial courts in a democratic society and the courts’ role in ensuring that the government shall not “abridge the freedom of speech or of the press.â€
