SC Bar Foundation Awards NJC 2015-16 Scholarship Grant for New Judges

The South Carolina Bar Foundation has awarded a $12,000 grant to The National Judicial College to provide scholarship support for new South Carolina judges to attend courses in Reno.

The scholarships will be used for six South Carolina judges to attend NJC’s two-week General Jurisdiction course in 2015-2016. The gift continues a funding relationship with the College that dates back to 1989.

“Even during the recent Recession years, the South Carolina Bar Foundation provided annual scholarship grants to the NJC,†said Hon. Chad C. Schmucker, president of the NJC. “They clearly place a priority on their new judges receiving quality national judicial education programming.â€

Under the terms of the agreement with the South Carolina Bar Foundation, the NJC will provide a match of $6,000 to help underwrite travel/lodging for the six South Carolina scholarship recipients.

Annually, more than 100 judges from around the country attend General Jurisdiction, either in the fall or spring at the NJC. It is an intensive two-week course for new judges to help provide a solid foundation for a new judicial career. Class topics include: courtroom management, judicial discretion, jury panel, ethics, sentencing, evidence, working with the media and courtroom security.
