Like much of the nation, opioids and drug use remain a serious challenge for tribal communities. Tribal governments, often working with public agencies in their region, have created programs to address the challenge. Tribal judges can play a critical role in helping those who appear before them to get help and overcome addiction. Indeed, tribal judges have played leading and creative roles in creating wellness courts and other programs to resolve tribal members’ substance use issues and re-integrate them into the tribal community.
