The National Judicial College has named Dean Aviva Abramovsky as its next president and chief executive officer. She currently serves as the dean and a professor of law at the University of Idaho College of Law and previously was the dean of the University of Buffalo Law School, The State University of New York.

“Dean Abramovsky is passionate about the two things that matter most to the NJC: the law and education,” Hon. Mary-Margaret Anderson, immediate past chair of the NJC Board of Trustees, said. “She has impressive experience in both program development and fundraising and is a personable and dynamic speaker. Dean Abramovsky is the strategic visionary the NJC needs to grow and flourish.”
While a law dean, Dean Abramovsky created several new initiatives, including an undergraduate program in law, several 3+3 BA/JD programs, a doctorate in judicial science, new clinical programs and the revitalization of an Innocence and Justice Project. At the Syracuse University College of Law, she served as the Kaufman Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation as well as the Associate Dean for International Initiatives and Associate Dean for Special Projects.
“Being raised by a criminal law professor and an administrative law judge, I have tremendous respect for the judiciary and the valuable service they provide to our country and their communities each day,” Dean Abramovsky said. “Their jobs are often difficult and undervalued and the NJC is here not only to develop judges who strive to be the best they can be, but to build a community that supports and inspires the judiciary.”
A noted expert in insurance law, commercial law, regulation of financial entities and legal ethics, Dean Abramovsky has authored “Uniform Commercial Code, West’s McKinney’s Forms for New York,” as well as numerous other book chapters and articles in the insurance and commercial law fields. She is also a member of the American Law Institute. She received the New York State Bar Association Professor David D. Siegel Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the study of New York law. Dean Abramovsky served twice as an academic evaluator for the American Bar Association’s federal judiciary committees.
While in private practice, Dean Abramovsky worked at Anderson Kill & Olick in New York, focusing on insurance law in the aftermath of 9/11. She earned her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania where she served as managing editor of the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law. She graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial & Labor Relations.
