The NJC is coming to Washington, D.C., the week of December 10 for these huge events:
- A four-day course for judges on Contemporary Threats to Judicial Independence and Freedom of the Press (register now – slots are nearly gone);
- A historic symposium for judges and journalists at the National Press Club titled “‘So-Called Judges’ and the ‘Enemy of the People’: Judges, Journalists and the Prospects for Democracy.”
Many major figures in media, law and government have been invited to speak at the symposium, which a long list of national organizations have already stepped forward to cosponsor. Among speakers already booked are NPR Supreme Court correspondent Nina Totenberg and Marty Baron, editor of The Washington Post, who was one of the heroes depicted in the 2016 Best Picture Oscar winner Spotlight.
The symposium, which will also constitute the final day of Contemporary Threats to Judicial Independence and Freedom of the Press, is built around the analysis contained in the 2018 bestseller “How Democracies Die” by Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt. The book finds that modern democracies most often fall not from violent overthrows but after the election of a populist demagogue who then undermines essential elements of democracy like judicial independence and freedom of the press.
