Announcing the creation of the Hon. Janet J. Berry Endowment

RENO, Nev. — An endowment fund has been created to honor former National Judicial College Board Chair and retiring Nevada District Court Judge Janet Berry.

Proceeds from the Hon. Janet J. Berry Endowment will be used to fund scholarships and educational programs for judicial education focused on addiction and mental health treatment.

The College will host a cocktail reception in her honor from 5–7 p.m. June 8. RSVP by May 22  to Jeanne Hill, director of development, at (775) 327-8257 or hill@judges.org.

Tax-deductible gifts may be sent to The National Judicial College, Judicial College Building, 1664 N. Virginia Street, MS 358, Reno, NV 89557. Checks should be made payable to the NJC and marked “for Berry Endowment.â€

Berry was a trustee of the College from 1997–2000 and served as chair of the board from 2001–2002. She has been an NJC student and faculty member since 1992 and obtained a master’s in judicial studies through the College in 1997. For years she has served as presiding judge at the National Trial Academy sponsored by the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association and the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Her judicial career in Northern Nevada spans more than two decades. Her many community outreach projects include the creation of Mental Health and Youth Offender Courts, Transforming Youth Recovery, the Washoe County Criminal Advisory Committee, Every 15 Minutes, the Kid’s Court/Ask an Inmate program and television programs “The Language of Law†and “Law Day Live.â€

She speaks at many state and national legal education conferences on jury management, voir dire, domestic violence and its effects upon children, criminal sentencing, community outreach, international judicial education, courts and the media, mental health courts and medical ethics.

She plans to retire from the bench in April 2017.
