Judge David Shakes, who first attended The National Judicial College in 2000, has been named recipient of the Sandra Day O’Connor Award for the Judicially Speaking program he helped start in 2009.

Judicially Speaking is a collaborative program made possible by 100-plus judges and educators who have dedicated their time and creativity to improving public education about what judges do. Judge Shakes and the program have helped to reach out to thousands of middle and high school students and has been integrated into Colorado’s social studies curriculum.
In addition to being an alumnus of the NJC, Judge Shakes served as a group facilitator in the fall 2013 General Jurisdiction course, where he helped stimulate and direct the flow of conversation in the group. He has also recently completed the Faculty Development Workshop and will serve as a faculty member in our upcoming General Jurisdiction course, April 27-May 7, 2015 in Reno, NV.
